Manuela Cunha

Manuela Cunha is an Of Counsel and has been at Abreu Advogados since 2023, working mainly in the areas of Corporate Law, Litigation and Arbitration.

With over 30 years of experience, Manuela Cunha's expertise covers the whole range of corporate transactions, with emphasis on investments, banking, financial services and products, litigation, domestic and international arbitration, joint ventures, international financing, project finance and infrastructure.

Both as a process assessor and as a consultant trainer, she has dedicated part of her activity to governance and compliance.

Manuela Cunha has been regularly appointed as arbitrator in arbitration proceedings under Angolan law and, internationally, as expert or legal consultant.

She is also a member of Concordia - Mediation of Conflicts and Arbitration, a Portuguese association whose scope includes the promotion of conciliation, conflict mediation and arbitration services.

As an invited Professor at the Agostinho Neto University Law School, Luanda (1995 to 2007) she taught the subject Executive Action/Civil Procedure II.

Between 1974 and 1975, she joined the Office of Studies of the Ministry of Economy of the Transitional and Provisional Governments of Angola.

Manuela Cunha is an admitted lawyer in the Angolan and Portuguese Bar Associations.

Experience

  • Acting for an Angolan company in an UNCITRAL arbitration against a public company concerning a power sale agreement, in which the Court ordered the public company to pay the Angolan company approximately USD 16 million;
     

  • Arbitrator appointed to several Angolan arbitrations regarding real estate contracts;
     

  • Advising the Angolan Ministry of Transport on a management contract for the flagship airline, signed with an international company;
     

  • As an expert in Angolan legislation, carried out audits and legal opinions in connection with share capital purchase agreements, qualification in foreign capital markets and international financing;
     

  • Advising the Social Support Fund, Government of Angola, in the 1st IDAS / World Bank financing, negotiated in Angola and Washington DC.
